Rules and regulations may limit creativity – on the other hand, they can be liberating, especially in times of seemingly endless possibilities. The question is, whether exciting results emerge when graphic designers disregard rules or rather when they consciously allow restrictions. Are design rules crucial and important or just an unnecessary dictation and the only rule to follow should be: no rules?
The idea here was born from my background in architecture. Most projects would start off with a well defined grid. It introduces an overall order, some would even call it “divine”. Components and elements seem to naturally fall into place once an underlying system is in place.
What happens, though, when that infrastructure is abandoned? When the rules are put aside to allow for some chaos to linger in? Are we lost in space? Perhaps we let chance play a role?
This series is an exploration of order vs. chaos.
